An index tracks the combined price of a group of shares, so one number can tell you how the whole market, its biggest companies or a single sector performed.
NGX indices are weighted by market capitalisation: the bigger the company, the more its share price moves the index.
What is the NGX All-Share Index (ASI)?
The All-Share Index measures the whole Nigerian stock market. It includes every ordinary share listed on the Nigerian Exchange, weighted by market capitalisation, so the largest companies move it most. When people say “the Nigerian market rose today”, they usually mean the ASI.
How is the All-Share Index calculated?
It compares the total market value of the listed shares with their value on the index base date. Because it is weighted by market capitalisation, a 1% move in a very large company such as MTN Nigeria or Dangote Cement moves the index far more than the same move in a small company.
What is the difference between the ASI and the NGX 30?
The ASI covers all listed shares; the NGX 30 covers only the 30 largest and most traded companies. The NGX 30 is often used as the benchmark for funds and ETFs that track Nigerian blue chips.
What are NGX sector indices?
Sector indices such as NGX Banking, Consumer Goods, Industrial Goods, Insurance and Oil/Gas track only the companies in one part of the economy, so you can see which sectors are leading or lagging the market.
Can I invest in an NGX index?
You cannot buy an index directly, but you can buy an ETF or a fund that tracks one. For example, ETFs on the NGX follow the NGX 30, the Pension index and several sector indices.
When are index levels updated?
NGX publishes index levels at the end of each trading session. The levels on NaijaTicker are those end-of-day values; returns compare the latest close with the close at the start of each period.
Index levels are end-of-day values published by NGX. Returns are price returns over each period.
