Looking at the market by sector shows where money is moving: whether banks are rallying while consumer stocks lag, or oil and gas is carrying the index.
Each sector page lists every company in it, ranked by size, with today’s moves and the sector’s returns.
How does NGX group companies into sectors?
NGX assigns every listed company to one of 13 sectors, such as Financial Services, Industrial Goods, Consumer Goods, Oil and Gas and ICT, and within each sector to an industry such as Banking or Insurance. NaijaTicker follows that classification.
What is the difference between a sector and an industry?
A sector is the broad part of the economy a company belongs to; an industry is a narrower group inside it. Banking and Insurance, for example, are both industries within the Financial Services sector.
How is a sector’s daily change calculated?
It is weighted by market capitalisation: the change in the combined market value of the sector’s companies from one close to the next, holding their share counts fixed. Large companies therefore move the figure more than small ones, just like the NGX indices.
Which is the biggest sector on the NGX?
The table above ranks sectors by market capitalisation and shows each one’s share of the whole market. A few very large companies, such as MTN Nigeria in ICT or Dangote Cement in Industrial Goods, can make a sector much larger than its number of listed companies suggests.
Are there indices for individual sectors?
Yes. NGX publishes sector indices for Banking, Consumer Goods, Industrial Goods, Insurance and Oil/Gas, among others. You can see them on the Indices page, and each sector page links to its index where one exists.
Sectors and industries follow NGX's classification. Daily change is weighted by market capitalisation. Returns use NGX's official sector index where one exists (Industrial Goods, Consumer Goods, Oil & Gas); for other sectors they start when NGX share counts were first recorded, so longer periods show "—" until enough history exists.
