A new securities exchange is about to go live in Nigeria, it official name is ContiSX Securities Exchange Plc, the website countdown points to 19 October 2026. Headquartered in New Owerri, Imo State, it was founded by Prof. Ndubuisi Ekekwe of Tekedia. Its slogan is “exchanging prosperity.”
If you have heard the name and are wondering whether it is another Lagos stock story, a crypto app, or something you can actually use from Aba, Kano or the diaspora, these are the answers that matter.
What exactly is ContiSX?
It is a full-service securities exchange — a stock market plus more. It is built to list and trade equities, government and corporate bonds, Treasury Bills, commercial papers, ETFs, private-market instruments, and other products. It also talks about derivatives, tokenised instruments, and something it calls Contisx Economic Instruments (CEIs): small, standardised pieces of real businesses, farms, and projects that people can buy from as little as a few thousand naira.
Is it regulated? Is it real?
Yes, it is under the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Nigeria. In April 2026 the SEC granted it Approval-in-Principle. The official site now presents the exchange as licensed and regulated. That is the difference between a roadside scheme and a market that has to follow capital-market rules on listings, brokers, custody and investor protection. Always confirm operators on the SEC’s own register before you send money.
How is this different from NGX, FMDQ or NASD?
NGX is still the main public equities market. FMDQ dominates a lot of fixed income and currencies. NASD handles some unlisted securities. ContiSX wants to sit beside them as a multi-asset venue: public markets, private markets, SME/cooperative listings, live auctions, and tools aimed at people who never opened a CSCS account.
Can an ordinary person invest? How do I open an account?
The website says open an account through licensed dealing members (brokers), then invest. That is the same basic Nigerian model as NGX: you do not usually trade the exchange itself; you go through a SEC-licensed broker, complete KYC (ID, BVN, address), and hold securities in a depository account. Retail onboarding is expected after the institutional rollout. Join the waitlist on contisx.com and wait for live buttons at launch. Do not send money to random DMs.
Minimums shown on demo CEI deals have been in the ₦8,000–₦25,000 range. That is the inclusion story: smaller tickets than a typical IPO allocation culture.
Can SMEs, cooperatives or my state raise money there?
That is a core claim. The exchange is pitching SME boards, cooperative shares, commercial papers, bonds and CEIs so a business or community project can raise working capital without only begging a bank. Brokers and dealers can also launch branded venues on its infrastructure. Execution after launch is what will prove it.
What about diaspora Nigerians?
The founder has openly courted diaspora capital with the line “Invest at Home, Thrive Globally.” In principle, non-resident Nigerians already invest in Nigerian markets through licensed brokers and proper FX/repatriation channels. ContiSX wants to make that path clearer. Rules still depend on where you live and how money enters and leaves Nigeria. Use a licensed broker, not WhatsApp “slots.”
Is there crypto? What is the ContiSX Phone?
The platform includes digital-asset and tokenisation language, stablecoin frameworks, and hybrid on-chain/off-chain settlement — all under the securities-law umbrella, not as an unregulated coin casino. Separately, they are promoting a ContiSX Phone: a blockchain-oriented device with multilingual support (Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, Pidgin, English) and a “zero-data” claim for using ContiSX services. Apps are also promised on ordinary Android, iOS, web and even Smart TV. Treat the phone as an access product, not a requirement.
Should you care?
If ContiSX does what it says, Nigeria gets a second full-service exchange, smaller tickets into bonds and real businesses, and more ways for money outside banks to earn something. If it under-delivers, you still have NGX, FMDQ, licensed apps and T-bills.
The practical move before 19 October: join the official waitlist, verify any broker on SEC’s list, and ignore anyone asking you to “buy ContiSX tokens” privately. A new exchange is useful only if it is regulated, liquid, and boring in the right ways.
