Airtel Just Unleashed Starlink Across Africa as 174 Million Customers Could Soon Go Satellite

Airtel Africa has commercially launched the continent’s first satellite-to-mobile (Direct-to-Cell) service in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in partnership with SpaceX's Starlink. The service enables Airtel customers with compatible LTE Android smartphones to access SMS and light-data applications, such as WhatsApp, in non-terrestrial areas without requiring specialized hardware or dishes.

DRC’s massive geography makes deploying traditional terrestrial infrastructure economically challenging; building a conventional cell tower can cost up to $150,000. By utilizing Starlink's 650-satellite fleet, Airtel can bypass these high capital expenditure (CapEx) hurdles to capture subscribers in remote communities where connectivity gaps are severe. Currently, 4.3 million Congolese lack basic mobile reach, with nationwide 4G coverage at only 57%. By utilizing spectrum Airtel already holds under its national license (1965 MHz uplink and 2155 MHz downlink), the company minimizes incremental spectrum expenses while seeking to grow mobile data revenues.

Investors should monitor subscription uptake following Airtel DRC’s 30-day free trial to evaluate real-world adoption. Airtel plans to scale this technology across all 14 of its African markets, including Nigeria, potentially expanding satellite connectivity to 174 million customers across its footprint.

The near-term commercial opportunity faces immediate constraints. First, the service is currently limited to speeds below 1 Mbps, which excludes full web browsing or streaming. Second, the expansion remains subject to strict country-specific regulatory approvals. Finally, upcoming regulatory decisions at the WRC27 conference regarding cross-border terrestrial interference limits could heavily degrade future satellite-to-mobile coverage and performance. Competition is also rising as rivals MTN Zambia and AXIAN Telecom progress with their own satellite testing.
