NAICOM’s Takaful Push Could Open a New Market for Nigeria’s Insurers

NAICOM reaffirmed on August 22 that it is working to expand Takaful insurance in Nigeria, with the regulator positioning the Sharia-compliant insurance model as a way to improve insurance penetration and broaden access to coverage. The announcement is particularly relevant after the industry's recent recapitalisation exercise, which has left insurers with stronger capital requirements and a need to expand their markets.

The development could create a new growth channel for listed insurers if Takaful products attract customers who have historically remained outside conventional insurance. The potential market extends beyond individual policies to areas such as family, health, agriculture and business-related coverage.

For investors, the important question is whether insurers can turn the regulatory push into actual premium growth and profitable underwriting, rather than simply adding another product category. Increased competition could also favour companies with stronger distribution networks and digital channels.

The opportunity is still developing, however. NAICOM's renewed commitment does not automatically translate into immediate earnings for listed insurers, and adoption will depend on product availability, consumer awareness and regulatory execution.

Investor watch: which listed insurers expand their Takaful offerings, the pace of regulatory approvals and whether the new segment begins contributing meaningfully to gross written premiums.
